Otway Estate produces wine under two labels, Otway Estate and Yahoo Creek. All fruit grown on the property at Otway Estate is under the 'Estate' label whereas fruit sourced from the local area is bottled under our Yahoo Creek label. Fruit for Yahoo Creek comes predominantly from Irrewarra, Birregurra and through to Geelong.
Both Yahoo Creek and the Otway Ranges were named after British Mariner Sir William Albany Otway. "On 7th December 1800, Lieutenant James Grant commander of the LADY NELSON, wrote "I named it Cape Albany Otway, in honour of William Albany Otway, Esq. Captain in the Royal Navy, and one of the Commissioners of the Transport Board"
The name was later shortened to its present form, The Otway Ranges. Yahoo was believed to be one of the vessels sailed by William Albany Otway. Yahoo Creek was named in the early 1800's and is situated in the Otway Ranges was thereby named after this sailing vessel.
